Fastest Way to Reduce Your Bills Now

Most people assume their monthly bills are fixed. The internet company charges what it charges. The streaming service costs what it costs. The insurance renewal arrives, and you pay it.

But many bills are more flexible than they appear.

All these companies have just one main goal: to get as much of your money as possible. When you say you might stop paying, the math changes for them. Now the best way to get money from you is to charge a lower rate!

A simple “Financial Spring Cleaning” can help you reduce recurring expenses without making major changes to your lifestyle. The method is straightforward: review your accounts, call the companies, and ask for a better rate.

That is it. All you need to do is ask.

Start by making a list of bills that may be negotiable. Good places to look include:

  • Internet and cable service
  • Cell phone plans
  • Streaming subscriptions
  • Auto and home insurance
  • Gym memberships
  • Security systems
  • Software subscriptions
  • Credit card annual fees

Do a quick Google search to find out what competitors are offering. Look for introductory promotions, lower-cost plans, or discounts for new customers. Having a specific competing offer gives you more leverage during the call!

For example, I was paying $67 per month for internet service. I found an introductory offer from another internet company for $42 per month. I called my current provider, explained that I was considering switching, and told them about the competitor’s price.

They matched it.

That one phone call reduced my bill by $25 per month. That is $300 per year for the same internet service I already had. What could you do with $300?

When you call, be polite and direct. You might say:

“I have been reviewing my monthly expenses, and I found another company offering similar service for $42 per month. I am happy with your service so I would prefer to stay with you. Are there any promotions or discounts available that could lower my bill?”

The first person you speak with may not be able to help. Ask whether there is a customer-retention department or someone who can review your account for available promotions.

You can also ask whether removing features, changing plans, using automatic payments, or combining services would lower the price. Just recently I found out my music streaming service had changed their plans around and put me into a more expensive tier! By changing from their $21 per month plan to their $16 per month plan I saved $5 and I’m still on the ad free tier! Just make sure you understand any contract terms, equipment fees, or price increases that may apply later.

This method will not work with every company every time. However, it works often enough to make the calls worthwhile. When I did this last month, I found savings on my internet, car insurance, home insurane, music streaming, video streaming, and cell phone plan. I reduced my monthly costs by over $150! That’s almost $2,000 per year I am not spending any more.

Financial Spring Cleaning is not about giving up everything you enjoy. It is about making sure you are not paying more than necessary.

Review your bills, compare prices, and make the call. The worst they can say is no. The best outcome is that you keep the same service and keep more of your money.
