Referral disclosure: I may receive cash, stock, cryptocurrency or another reward if you use one of these links and complete the required steps. I tested these offers personally, but the rewards and requirements may have changed. Check the current terms before depositing or purchasing anything.
Do Online Referral Bonuses Work? My Results, Payout Times and Risks
We’ve all seen people hawking “free money” on Reddit and other places. “Sign up with my link!” Is it a scam? I tried quite a few of the sites commonly posted to social media and made this list of what worked for me.
The answer in a nutshell: Yes, legitimate online referral bonuses can pay, but they are not reliable income. I successfully received rewards from the companies below, although some required deposits, purchases, waiting periods or subscription commitments. And my biggest reward was $30.
These offers make the most sense when:
- You are a new and eligible customer.
- You understand every requirement.
- You can spare the required money.
- You do not need that money back immediately.
- The likely reward is worth the time and risk.
They do not make sense if completing an offer could leave you short on rent, food, medicine, transportation, utilities, or insurance.
Read the terms before doing anything
Before signing up, write down:
- How much must you deposit or spend?
- What must you buy?
- How long must the money remain in the account?
- When will the reward arrive?
- Can the reward be withdrawn immediately?
- Are there trading, selling, transfer, or account fees?
- Is the reward guaranteed or based on chance?
- Is there a monthly subscription fee?
Take screenshots of the offer and its terms. Promotions can change, and your screenshot can help if you need to contact customer support.
Also remember that an ACH transfer may take several business days in each direction. Money that takes five business days to enter an account could take several more days to return to your bank. A promotion with “no lockup” is not necessarily the same as instant access to cash.
Referral offers that worked for me
The details below describe the offers I encountered. Confirm the current offer on the signup page because the amount and requirements may now be different. Coinbase, Robinhood, Kraken, Uphold, Acorns, and other platforms state that referral promotions are subject to eligibility rules and may be changed, limited, or discontinued.
Coinbase: I received $20
When I completed the offer, I bought $15 of cryptocurrency and received a $20 reward. My reward took about two business days to arrive, and there was no promotional holding period in the version I completed.

Check the signup screen carefully. Coinbase currently displays several different new-customer promotions, and the offer available to one person may differ from the offer available to another.
OKX: I received $20
My offer required a $1 cryptocurrency purchase for a $20 reward. The reward appeared within minutes but had a 30-day holding period.
Referral code: 33403387
Website: www.okx.com
Because availability and rules can depend on location, confirm that the platform and specific promotion are available where you live.
Robinhood: I received $11+
My offer required depositing at least $1. No investment purchase was necessary to qualify for the promotional stock reward. In my account, the promotional rewards appeared shortly after I completed the qualifying steps. The separate prediction-markets reward may not be part of the referral offer and may not be available to every user.
The reward was selected from a range, so the advertised maximum was possible but not typical. Treat a sweepstakes-style or randomly selected reward as uncertain—not as money you are guaranteed to receive.

Robinhood’s current help information says reward stock must be claimed and that selling restrictions can apply. Its current U.S. help page says referral stock can be sold three trading days after it is claimed.
Kraken: I received $30+
My version required buying $100 of cryptocurrency. The main reward was selected from a range, and it arrived in about a day. My offer included a holding period of 30 days.
After my first purchase, I could also use an in-app feature that awarded small random cryptocurrency prizes of $0.25 to $1 over 30 days.

Kraken says its deposit, trading, and reward requirements can vary by offer, so check the conditions displayed inside the app rather than assuming my experience will be yours.
What if you do not have money to deposit?
Some “Get Paid To” sites offer small rewards for surveys, games, advertisements, or account setup. These are unlikely to replace a job, but they may produce a few dollars without requiring a large deposit.
ZBD – I received $10+
Within minutes of signing up I was able to complete their $8 offer to enable CashApp to receive their payments. (Don’t have Cashapp? https://cash.app/refer/VGHJPHJ) At the time of writing, ZBD offered $2 for signing up with my link.
The Cashapp task required purchasing $1 of Bitcoin, but I was able to sell it afterward and the reward was available immediately. That’s $10 for just a few minutes’ work!

Do not assume the reward is still $10—or that every step and withdrawal method remains the same. Check the current offer before starting.
Cointiply – I cashed out $45
Cointiply is a site similar to Freecash and other sites, but it pays in cryptocurrency and had a low cash-out threshold when I used it. My first withdrawal was held for 45 days, so I would not treat this as a source of quick cash.

Freecash – I cashed out $60
Freecash was not my favorite platform, but I did eventually reach the withdrawal threshold.

Some activities may take substantial time or require purchases. Calculate your actual hourly earnings and skip any task that asks you to spend more than you can reasonably expect to receive.

The risks people overlook
Your money may be unavailable
A deposit may be subject to an ACH delay, settlement period, withdrawal review, promotional lockup, or fraud-prevention hold. Never use bill money to complete a referral.
The reward may lose value
A $20 cryptocurrency reward can be worth less by the time you are permitted to sell it. A stock reward can also rise or fall.
For a small bonus, selling promptly after the required holding period can reduce your exposure to price changes—but selling may create a reportable tax transaction.
Fees can erase the bonus
Before completing an offer, check:
- Purchase or trading fees
- The difference between the buying and selling price
- Withdrawal and network fees
- Instant-transfer fees
- Subscription charges
- Account-closing fees
- Possible tax consequences
If you deposit $100, receive $10, and lose $7 to fees and price changes, your real reward was only $3.
Rewards may be taxable
In the United States, digital-asset income may need to be reported, and selling cryptocurrency can create a gain or loss that must also be tracked. Keep records showing the date, dollar value when received, sale price, and related fees.
Identity theft and scams are real
Legitimate financial platforms may require identity verification. That does not mean you should send identification through text messages, social media, or unofficial websites.
Use the company’s official app or website. Never give another person your password, verification code, seed phrase, or remote access to your phone.
So, do online referrals work?
Yes, legitimate referral bonuses can work. They can provide $5, $10, $20, or occasionally more for opening an account and completing specific steps.
But they are best viewed as occasional bonuses, not a reliable income source.
Start with offers that require little or no money and have clear, guaranteed rewards. Be more cautious with sweepstakes-style promotions, long lockups, monthly fees, and cryptocurrency purchases.
Above all, never risk $100 that you need next week in order to chase a possible $20 bonus next month.
Read the rules, protect your cash, keep records, and withdraw your original money when the terms allow. A referral bonus is useful only when you finish with more money—not a new fee, a forgotten subscription, or another financial problem.
